MaxFlex FR
Black rubber insulation is suitable for cold applications, with an operating temperature range of -57 to 125 degrees Celsius. It has a very low thermal conductivity, giving it an advantage over other types of insulation for low-temperature applications.
Thermal Conductivity
Thermal conductivity indicates how much heat a material can transmit. A higher value means the material can transfer heat more quickly and efficiently. Therefore, good thermal insulation should have a low thermal conductivity value, ideally close to 0.
MaxFlex FR black rubber insulation has low thermal conductivity, suitable for low-temperature applications. At 0°C, its thermal conductivity is only 0.031 W/m.K, which is very low, allowing it to retain cold within the system effectively and minimize energy loss.
UV Resistance
The properties of MaxFlex FR black rubber, made from EPDM rubber, give it higher UV resistance than other materials. We tested UV resistance with the Department of Science Service using UVB-313 radiation at 60°C for 8 continuous hours. The results showed no changes to the MaxFlex FR insulation.
This ensures that when installed and exposed to sunlight, it can withstand without cracking. However, if MaxFlex FR black rubber insulation is installed outdoors and exposed to sunlight and weather conditions, it should be jacketed to extend the material’s lifespan due to weather and biological factors.
Water Absorption
The water absorption property of materials in insulation applications should be low. In black rubber insulation applications that encounter low temperatures, condensation can easily occur, which can cause pipe corrosion or damage to other materials.
Therefore, black rubber insulation or other types of insulation should not absorb water. The water absorption of MaxFlex FR black rubber insulation is less than 0.05% by volume, which is extremely low – practically non-absorbent.
Fire Performance
Building systems have strict requirements for materials, especially regarding flammability. Black rubber insulation is used in water pipe systems or air conditioning systems, which run throughout the building. If the material attached to the pipes catches fire, it could spread quickly throughout the building.
Insulation in pipe systems or air conditioning systems must therefore be fire-resistant. We have tested the fire resistance of MaxFlex FR black rubber insulation according to many standards including BS 476 Part 7, UL 94, ASTM D635, and it has been confirmed as a non-flammable material. When ignited, the flame will self-extinguish.
